Common questions

Living between Tampa and Orlando
raises good questions.

Many Lakeland families work in one county and live in another. Here are three common questions for people who live in Lakeland.

“I work in Tampa. Which plans can I get?”

Your plan list is based on where you live, not where you work. A Lakeland home means you shop with your home ZIP code. One Lakeland ZIP code, 33810, even crosses into Hillsborough County.

“Is my hospital in the plan?”

In 2026, 112 of Polk County's 159 Marketplace plans were HMOs. An HMO usually pays only for doctors and hospitals in its network, except in an emergency.

“Will my tax credit be the same as last year?”

Maybe not. As of October 2, 2026, under current law, the extra help some people got in past years ended after 2025, and Congress has not brought it back. If your income is over 400% of the poverty level, you generally can't get a tax credit. Near that level, your credit may be small.

Straight answers

Lakeland health insurance questions.

Which companies offered Marketplace plans in Polk County for 2026?

Polk County plans for 2026 came from 6 companies: Ambetter Health, Florida Blue, Molina Healthcare, Oscar, UnitedHealthcare, and Wellpoint. That is fewer than nearby Orange or Osceola County. The 2027 list should be posted around November 1, 2026, when open enrollment starts.

I live in Lakeland but work in Tampa or Orlando. Does that change my plans?

Your plans are based on your home address. Use your home ZIP code when you shop. If you want to see a doctor near work, look that doctor up in each plan before you enroll. We can do that with you.

Is Lakeland Regional Health in every plan?

Don't assume it is. Each plan picks its own hospitals and doctors, and most Polk County plans are HMOs. Look up the hospital in each plan's directory before you enroll.

Can I get a PPO in Polk County?

Some 2026 Polk County Marketplace plans were not HMOs: 14 were PPOs, 19 were EPOs, and 14 were POS plans. Each type has its own rules for doctors outside the network. If your tax credit is small or zero, a private PPO plan may be another option to look at. Some private plans ask health questions, and approval is not guaranteed. Some may not cover care for health problems you had before you enrolled.

What if my income is very low?

As of October 2, 2026, Florida has not expanded Medicaid. Some adults with income below the poverty level do not qualify for Medicaid or for a tax credit. It is still worth applying, because children, pregnant women, and people with disabilities may qualify. Community health centers also charge based on what you can pay.

When is open enrollment for 2027 coverage?

You can sign up from November 1, 2026, through January 15, 2027. To start coverage January 1, pick a plan by December 15. Outside those dates, you usually need a life event, such as a move or losing other coverage. Our Florida open enrollment guide has the details.

Open enrollment starts November 1
