Between client calls

Contracts end.
Coverage should not.

Consulting income rises and falls with the next engagement. Three questions consultants ask us:

I am between contracts right now.

A gap in billable work can drop your yearly income. Make a careful full-year guess, and update it when a new retainer starts.

Some months are all travel.

Every Marketplace plan covers emergency care anywhere in the U.S. Routine care away from home may cost more, or may not be covered at all, out of network, so check before a long engagement.

I bill through an LLC or S-corp.

How you take pay can change which plan path fits. We look at your household income either way. For S-corp owner details, see our S-corp owner health insurance guide.

How consulting income works

Retainers, projects, and contract gaps.

The Marketplace bases tax credits on your household income for the year you are covered.

  • Retainers can steady the year. Project fees can make one quarter look big and the next quiet.
  • Travel, software, and subcontractors may be business costs that lower net profit.
  • A gap between contracts still needs a full-year income guess for tax credits.

Working with Paul

A broker who gets
project-based work.

Paul Daniels owns Daniels Health Advisors, an independent brokerage licensed in 30+ U.S. states. Independent consultants, management analysts, and LLC or S-corp owners call us between engagements. Marketplace plans with possible tax credits are our usual start. When retainers run high, we also show private PPO options and self-employed nationwide PPO options. Some private plans ask health questions, and approval is not guaranteed. Some may not cover care for health problems you had before you enrolled.

Many consultants leave a staff job for independent work, or bounce between W-2 contracts and 1099 projects. Each switch can change your options, including whether COBRA or a Marketplace plan fits better after a job ends.

Before your next kickoff

Stay covered between
contracts.

Landing or losing a major retainer can move your income well off your guess, and tax credits true up when you file. Under current law, starting with 2026 taxes, there is no cap on that payback. We also confirm your doctors are in network. You will walk away with:

  • An income estimate from retainers and projects
  • Travel and software costs set apart for your tax pro
  • A COBRA-versus-Marketplace compare if you just left a job plan
  • Doctors checked by network at home and tips for care on the road

A checklist for

Consultants going independent.

  • Leaving a staff job with a plan can open a special time to sign up.
  • Track each invoice paid and each contract end date.
  • If you form an S-corp, read our S-corp owner guide before you enroll.
  • Compare COBRA with a Marketplace plan before you assume COBRA is required.

Consultant questions

Consultant health insurance FAQ.

I am on 1099 with three clients. Can you help?

Yes. Add net profit from each engagement after business costs, plus any W-2 contract pay, for your household income estimate.

What if a big contract ends and COBRA is expensive?

Losing job-based coverage can open a special enrollment period for a Marketplace plan, which many people compare with COBRA. See our COBRA alternative guide, or book a call and we will walk through both.

Do I need a different plan because I travel to clients?

Not a different type of plan, but networks matter. Confirm your doctors at home stay in network, and learn how each plan treats care in other states.

I work through an LLC taxed as an S-corp. Where do I start?

Start with your household income and how you take pay. Then read our S-corp owner guide or book a call so we can compare personal plan paths that fit.

Can I write off my health insurance?

Maybe. If you are self-employed and your business makes a profit, your premiums may be deductible on IRS Form 7206. You can't take it for any month you could get a subsidized job plan, including through a spouse. Ask your tax pro.

Do I have to wait for open enrollment?

For a private plan (not from the Marketplace), you can often apply any time of year. Some private plans ask health questions, and approval is not guaranteed. Some may not cover care for health problems you had before you enrolled. Marketplace plans, and other plans that follow ACA rules, work differently. As of October 14, 2026, under current law, open enrollment for 2027 Marketplace coverage runs from November 1, 2026, through January 15, 2027. A court case about these dates is still on appeal, so check HealthCare.gov. To start coverage January 1, pick a plan by December 15 (the deadline under current law). Outside those dates, you may need a qualifying life event, like losing job-based coverage, or another special enrollment period.
