On the ladder

Ladders, fumes,
and the rainy season.

Painting work can change with the weather and the market. Three questions painters ask:

Rain and slow months cut my jobs.

Outdoor painting slows in bad weather. Make a full-year income guess, and update it if things change.

I breathe dust and fumes at work.

Talk to a doctor about any breathing problems, and check that doctors you want are in each plan's network before you buy.

I work alone, then hire help for big jobs.

Your personal health plan stays the same either way. If you hire employees, ask about workers' comp separately.

How painting income works

Bids, square feet, and weather days.

The Marketplace bases tax credits on your household income for the year you are covered.

  • Most painters bid by the job or by the square foot. Repaints and new builds pay on different schedules.
  • Paint, tape, sprayers, ladders, and drop cloths come off the top. Your net profit is what counts.
  • Storm and rainy seasons can push outdoor jobs back weeks. Interior work can help fill the gap.

Working with Paul

Licensed help for
painting pros.

Paul Daniels owns Daniels Health Advisors, an independent brokerage licensed in 30+ U.S. states. We work with solo painters and small crews on their own personal and family plans. We check Marketplace plans first when tax credits may apply. If you clear more after supplies, we can also explain private PPO options. Some private plans ask health questions, and approval is not guaranteed. Some may not cover care for health problems you had before you enrolled.

Daniels Health Advisors compares personal and family plans for painters and their households. Business liability and workers' comp are separate, and we do not sell them.

Before your next repaint

Coverage that
fits your work.

A rainy stretch can make income lower than you planned, and a busy fall can push it higher. Either way, the credit settles up at tax time. Under current law, starting with 2026 taxes, there is no cap on that payback. We also check that your doctors are in each plan. You will come away with:

  • A weather-aware income estimate
  • Paint, sprayer, and ladder costs kept out of take-home pay
  • Doctors and specialists checked by network
  • Dates to review your plan each year

A checklist for

Painters growing past one truck.

  • If you add a crew, workers' comp and liability are separate from your health plan.
  • Keep receipts for paint and gear all year. They lower your net profit.
  • Respirators and safety gear help on the job. Your health plan covers doctor care, not gear.
  • If a spouse has a job plan, compare adding you with buying your own.

Painter questions

Painter health insurance FAQ.

Does this cover my painting business?

No. This page is about personal and family health insurance. It is not business liability or workers' comp. Ask a business insurance agent what your business needs.

I paint part time and work another job. Can you help?

Yes. If your other job offers a plan, start there. If not, we will look at plans based on your total household income.

What if I start a job plan later?

You can usually drop a personal plan when job coverage starts. Tell the Marketplace if you have tax credits.

I only paint from spring to fall. What about winter?

Count the whole year, including months with little or no work. Your yearly total, not a summer month, is what the Marketplace uses.

Can I write off my health insurance?

Maybe. If you are self-employed and your business makes a profit, your premiums may be deductible on IRS Form 7206. You can't take it for any month you could get a subsidized job plan, including through a spouse. Ask your tax pro.

Do I have to wait for open enrollment?

For a private plan (not from the Marketplace), you can often apply any time of year. Some private plans ask health questions, and approval is not guaranteed. Some may not cover care for health problems you had before you enrolled. Marketplace plans, and other plans that follow ACA rules, work differently. As of October 12, 2026, under current law, open enrollment for 2027 Marketplace coverage runs from November 1, 2026, through January 15, 2027. A court case about these dates is still on appeal, so check HealthCare.gov. To start coverage January 1, pick a plan by December 15 (the deadline under current law). Outside those dates, you may need a qualifying life event, like losing job-based coverage, or another special enrollment period.
