Under the hood

Flat rate.
Busted knuckles. Your own bay.

Repair work is skilled and physical, and pay can swing. Three questions mechanics ask:

Flat-rate pay changes every week.

When the shop is slow, so is your check. Make a careful full-year income guess, and update it if things change.

My tools cost a fortune.

If you are self-employed, tools and a service truck can be business costs. They can lower your net profit. Ask your tax pro.

The work is hard on my back and hands.

Lifting, kneeling, and working under cars add up. Check that the doctors you want are in each plan's network.

How mechanic income works

Flagged hours, labor rates, and parts.

The Marketplace bases tax credits on your household income for the year you are covered.

  • Flat-rate techs get paid by the job's book time, not hours on the clock. A slow week means a smaller check.
  • Shop owners earn from labor and parts markup, minus rent, lifts, and software.
  • Mobile mechanics drive to each job. Their van, fuel, and tools can count as business costs.

Working with Paul

Licensed help
for auto techs.

Paul Daniels owns Daniels Health Advisors, an independent brokerage licensed in 30+ U.S. states. Shop techs, mobile mechanics, and garage owners talk to us about their own health plans. Marketplace plans with tax credits come first. If you flag big hours all year, we can also show private PPO options. Some private plans ask health questions, and approval is not guaranteed. Some may not cover care for health problems you had before you enrolled.

Shop owners who hire can also look at group plans. For now, we compare personal and family plans for you and your household.

Before your next teardown

Coverage that
keeps you running.

Flat-rate pay can jump in busy months, and your credit may change with it. Under current law, starting with 2026 taxes, there is no cap on that payback. We also check that the doctors you want are in each plan. When we are done, you will have:

  • An income estimate from your flagged hours
  • Tool truck payments split out if you are self-employed
  • Clinics near your shop checked
  • Your enrollment and renewal dates noted

A checklist for

Techs going mobile or opening a shop.

  • Leaving a dealership plan can open a special time to sign up.
  • A mobile van, fuel, and tools may count as business costs.
  • If you hire techs, ask about group plans and workers' comp separately.
  • Keep a log of jobs and pay each week.

Mechanic questions

Mechanic health insurance FAQ.

I work at a dealership. Do I need this?

Start with the dealership plan if it offers one. If it does not, or you go out on your own, call us and we will compare other options.

I run a mobile repair business. Can you help?

Yes. Mobile mechanics are usually self-employed. We will help you guess your net profit and compare plans.

Does this cover my shop or my workers?

No. This page is about personal and family health insurance. It is not garage liability or workers' comp. Ask a business insurance agent what your shop needs.

I get paid for warranty work at a lower rate. Does that matter?

It can. Warranty jobs often pay fewer flagged hours. Use your real yearly pay, not your best week, when you guess income.

Can I write off my health insurance?

Maybe. If you are self-employed and your business makes a profit, your premiums may be deductible on IRS Form 7206. You can't take it for any month you could get a subsidized job plan, including through a spouse. Ask your tax pro.

Do I have to wait for open enrollment?

For a private plan (not from the Marketplace), you can often apply any time of year. Some private plans ask health questions, and approval is not guaranteed. Some may not cover care for health problems you had before you enrolled. Marketplace plans, and other plans that follow ACA rules, work differently. As of October 12, 2026, under current law, open enrollment for 2027 Marketplace coverage runs from November 1, 2026, through January 15, 2027. A court case about these dates is still on appeal, so check HealthCare.gov. To start coverage January 1, pick a plan by December 15 (the deadline under current law). Outside those dates, you may need a qualifying life event, like losing job-based coverage, or another special enrollment period.
