At the bench

Sharp tools.
Steady hands. Uneven work.

Carpentry can mean big jobs, then gaps. Three questions carpenters bring to us:

My work follows the building market.

When builders slow down, so do framing and trim jobs. Make your income guess for the whole year, and update it if work picks up or drops.

Cuts and back strain come with the job.

Pick a plan you can really use. Check the urgent care and doctors near your job sites before you buy.

I am going from a crew to my own shop.

Leaving a job that gave you health coverage can open a special time to sign up for a new plan.

How carpentry income works

Day rate, piece rate, or by the job.

The Marketplace bases tax credits on your household income for the year you are covered.

  • Framers may get paid by the square foot. Trim carpenters often bid by the room. Cabinet makers price by the project.
  • Lumber prices swing, and that can squeeze your margin on fixed bids. Count profit after materials.
  • If you work for a builder some weeks and for yourself others, add your W-2 pay and your net 1099 profit together.

Working with Paul

Straight help from
a licensed broker.

Daniels Health Advisors, led by Paul Daniels, is an independent brokerage licensed in 30+ U.S. states. Framers, trim carpenters, and cabinet shops call us to find a personal or family plan that fits their pay. We start with Marketplace plans where tax credits may apply, then add private PPO options if your income is higher. Some private plans ask health questions, and approval is not guaranteed. Some may not cover care for health problems you had before you enrolled.

Shop owners can also look at group options once they hire. For now, we compare personal and family plans for you and your household.

Before your next cut list

Square up your
coverage.

If lumber swings make your profit lower or higher than you guessed, the credit can change at tax time. Under current law, starting with 2026 taxes, there is no cap on that payback. Make sure the hand surgeon or clinic you trust is in the plan. Here is what you leave with:

  • An income guess that tracks bids and lumber costs
  • Union, spouse, and personal plan options compared
  • Clinics near your shop checked in each network
  • Open enrollment dates marked for next year

A checklist for

Carpenters opening their own shop.

  • Before your last day on a crew, ask when its plan ends. That date matters for signing up.
  • Keep a running total of shop income and material costs each month.
  • If you hire a helper, ask a business insurance agent about workers' comp.
  • Children can join your plan, and so can a spouse without coverage of their own.

Carpenter questions

Carpenter health insurance FAQ.

I'm a union carpenter. Do I need this?

Start with your union plan. If your hours drop below what the plan needs, or you go out on your own, call us and we will compare other options.

I build furniture on the side. Does that income count?

Yes. Side income counts toward your household income. Business costs from that work, like wood and tools, can lower your net profit.

Can I add my kids if I buy my own plan?

Yes. Personal plans can cover your spouse and children. Under federal law, children can generally stay on a parent's plan until they turn 26.

Does a shop full of sawdust change my plan choice?

Not the plan itself. It is a good reason to check that a lung doctor and an eye clinic are in network, and to know what urgent care costs.

Can I write off my health insurance?

Maybe. If you are self-employed and your business makes a profit, your premiums may be deductible on IRS Form 7206. You can't take it for any month you could get a subsidized job plan, including through a spouse. Ask your tax pro.

Do I have to wait for open enrollment?

For a private plan (not from the Marketplace), you can often apply any time of year. Some private plans ask health questions, and approval is not guaranteed. Some may not cover care for health problems you had before you enrolled. Marketplace plans, and other plans that follow ACA rules, work differently. As of October 12, 2026, under current law, open enrollment for 2027 Marketplace coverage runs from November 1, 2026, through January 15, 2027. A court case about these dates is still on appeal, so check HealthCare.gov. To start coverage January 1, pick a plan by December 15 (the deadline under current law). Outside those dates, you may need a qualifying life event, like losing job-based coverage, or another special enrollment period.
