Common questions

A big county means
a big list of plans.

In 2026, Hillsborough County had 173 Marketplace plans to choose from. Here are three common questions for people who live in Tampa.

“I work in St. Petersburg. Which plans can I get?”

Your plan list is based on where you live, not where you work. A Tampa home means you shop for Hillsborough County plans. If you want a doctor near work, look that doctor up in each plan first.

“Is my hospital in the plan?”

In 2026, 130 of Hillsborough County's 173 Marketplace plans were HMOs. An HMO usually pays only for doctors and hospitals in its network, except in an emergency.

“Will my tax credit be the same as last year?”

Maybe not. As of October 3, 2026, under current law, the extra help some people got in past years ended after 2025, and Congress has not brought it back. If your income is over 400% of the poverty level, you generally can't get a tax credit. Near that level, your credit may be small.

What you get

A short list
that fits you.

With so many plans, it is easy to pick one by monthly price alone. Then you may find out your doctor is not in it, or the deductible is higher than you thought. Here is what you take away from our call:

  • A short list of plans that include your doctors and hospital
  • A tax credit estimate you understand, and a plan to update it if your income changes
  • One yearly number for each plan that adds up the premium, deductible, and copays
  • Sign-up done by December 15, 2026 (the deadline under current law), so coverage can start January 1, 2027, once you pay the first premium

Hospitals in Tampa

Each Hillsborough County plan has its own network. Look up the hospital you would use in each plan before you sign up.

  • Tampa General HospitalTampa
  • St. Joseph's HospitalTampa
  • AdventHealth TampaTampa

This is not a list of in-network hospitals for any plan. Networks can change each year.

Straight answers

Tampa health insurance questions.

Which companies offered Marketplace plans in Hillsborough County for 2026?

Hillsborough County plans for 2026 came from 7 companies: Ambetter Health, AvMed, Florida Blue, Molina Healthcare, Oscar, UnitedHealthcare, and Wellpoint. The 2027 list should be posted around November 1, 2026, when open enrollment starts.

I live in Tampa but work in Pinellas or Pasco County. Does that change my plans?

Your plans are based on your home address. Use your home ZIP code when you shop. If you want to see a doctor near work, look that doctor up in each plan before you enroll. We can do that with you.

Is Tampa General Hospital in every plan?

Don't assume it is. Each plan picks its own hospitals and doctors, and most Hillsborough County plans are HMOs. Look up the hospital in each plan's directory before you enroll.

Can I get a PPO in Hillsborough County?

Some 2026 Hillsborough County Marketplace plans were not HMOs: 14 were PPOs, 19 were EPOs, and 10 were POS plans. Each type has its own rules for doctors outside the network. If your tax credit is small or zero, a private PPO plan may be another option to look at. Some private plans ask health questions, and approval is not guaranteed. Some may not cover care for health problems you had before you enrolled.

What if my income is very low?

As of October 3, 2026, Florida has not expanded Medicaid. Some adults with income below the poverty level do not qualify for Medicaid or for a tax credit. It is still worth applying, because children, pregnant women, and people with disabilities may qualify. Community health centers also charge based on what you can pay.

When is open enrollment for 2027 coverage?

As of October 3, 2026, under current law, you can sign up from November 1, 2026, through January 15, 2027. A court case about these dates is still on appeal, so check HealthCare.gov. To start coverage January 1, pick a plan by December 15. Outside those dates, you usually need a life event, such as a move or losing other coverage. Our Florida open enrollment guide has the details.

Open enrollment starts November 1
