Common questions

Between jobs?
Check your choices first.

In 2026, 544,502 people in Broward County picked a Marketplace plan during open enrollment. Here are three common questions for people who live in Sunrise.

“Is COBRA my only choice after I leave a job?”

No. COBRA lets you keep your work plan for a while, but you usually pay the full cost yourself. Losing job-based coverage can also let you pick a Marketplace plan. You usually have 60 days. We compare both with you.

“How long do I have to pick a plan?”

Losing job-based coverage can let you sign up outside open enrollment. You usually have 60 days after the coverage ends. You can often apply up to 60 days before it ends, too. We help you pick a start date so you don't have a gap.

“Is my hospital in the plan?”

In 2026, 146 of Broward County's 197 Marketplace plans were HMOs. An HMO usually pays only for doctors and hospitals in its network, except in an emergency.

Which companies offered Marketplace plans in Broward County for 2026?

Broward County plans for 2026 came from 10 companies: 22 Health, Ambetter Health, AmeriHealth Caritas Next, AvMed, Cigna Healthcare, Florida Blue, Molina Healthcare, Oscar, UnitedHealthcare, and Wellpoint. The 2027 list should be posted around November 1, 2026, when open enrollment starts.

I lost my job-based coverage. What can I do?

Losing job-based coverage can qualify you for a Special Enrollment Period. You usually have 60 days to pick a Marketplace plan. Our lost job coverage page has more on your choices.

If I choose COBRA, can I switch to a Marketplace plan later?

Sometimes. If your COBRA coverage runs out, you can usually pick a Marketplace plan within 60 days. If you drop COBRA early on your own, you usually have to wait for open enrollment. That is why it helps to compare both first. Our COBRA alternatives page has more.

Is HCA Florida Woodmont Hospital in every plan?

Don't assume it is. Each plan picks its own hospitals and doctors, and most Broward County plans are HMOs. Look up the hospital in each plan's directory before you enroll.

Can I get a PPO in Broward County?

Some. Of Broward County's 197 Marketplace plans for 2026, 14 were PPOs. Another 27 were EPOs and 10 were POS plans. Each type has its own rules for doctors outside the network. If your tax credit is small or zero, a private PPO plan may be another option to look at. Some private plans ask health questions, and approval is not guaranteed. Some may not cover care for health problems you had before you enrolled.

When is open enrollment for 2027 coverage?

As of October 9, 2026, under current law, you can sign up from November 1, 2026, through January 15, 2027. A court case about these dates is still on appeal, so check HealthCare.gov. To start coverage January 1, pick a plan by December 15. Outside those dates, you usually need a life event, such as a move or losing other coverage. Our Florida open enrollment guide has the details.

Open enrollment starts November 1
