Common questions

Paid by the job?
Plan for the whole year.

For 2026, Broward County shoppers could pick from 197 Marketplace plans sold by 10 companies. Here are three questions Oakland Park workers often ask us.

“Some months I earn a lot, some months very little. What number do I give?”

Give one number for the year you are covered. Add up what you expect to earn, then take out business costs like supplies, mileage, or tools. If the year turns out different, report the change so your tax credit stays on track.

“Do I still get help paying for my plan in 2027?”

Many people do, but it may be less. As of October 12, 2026, under current law, the extra help from past years ended after 2025, and Congress has not brought it back. Above 400% of the poverty level, there is generally no tax credit. Just under that line, it may be small.

“Will my doctor take my plan?”

Check before you pick. In 2026, 146 of Broward County's 197 Marketplace plans were HMOs. Most HMOs pay only for care inside their network, except in an emergency.

Oakland Park health insurance questions.

Which insurance companies sold Marketplace plans in Broward County for 2026?

Ten companies sold 2026 plans in Broward County: 22 Health, Ambetter Health, AmeriHealth Caritas Next, AvMed, Cigna Healthcare, Florida Blue, Molina Healthcare, Oscar, UnitedHealthcare, and Wellpoint. Look for the 2027 list near November 1, 2026, when open enrollment begins.

I drive for a rideshare or delivery app. Do I count as self-employed?

Most rideshare and delivery apps treat drivers as independent contractors, not employees. If that is you, use your best guess of your net profit for the year you are covered: what the apps pay you, minus business costs like mileage and phone. Include any other household income, too. For tax questions, ask a tax professional. Our gig worker page has more.

I started my own business this year. Can I get a plan now?

Starting a business by itself usually does not open a sign-up window. But if you lost job-based coverage when you left your job, you usually have 60 days to pick a plan. If not, you usually wait for open enrollment, unless you have another life event, like a move, marriage, or a new baby. When you apply, use your best guess of your net profit for the year you are covered. For tax questions, ask a tax professional. Our self-employed page has more.

Is Broward Health Imperial Point in every plan?

No one should assume so. Each plan sets its own list of hospitals and doctors, and most Broward County plans are HMOs. Search for the hospital in each plan's directory before you sign up.

Are there PPO plans in Broward County?

A few. For 2026, 14 of Broward County's 197 Marketplace plans were PPOs, 27 were EPOs, and 10 were POS plans. Each type treats out-of-network doctors in its own way. If you get little or no tax credit, a private PPO plan is another option to look at. Some of those plans ask health questions, approval is not guaranteed, and some may not cover health problems you had before you enrolled.

When is open enrollment for 2027 coverage?

As of October 12, 2026, under current law, you can sign up from November 1, 2026, through January 15, 2027. A court case about these dates is still on appeal, so check HealthCare.gov. To start coverage January 1, pick a plan by December 15. Outside those dates, you usually need a life event, such as a move or losing other coverage. Our Florida open enrollment guide has the details.

Open enrollment starts November 1
