Going solo?

Working on your own
means finding your own plan.

More electricians are running one-person shops. Three common questions for electricians on their own:

I just went out on my own.

You count as self-employed if your business has income but no employees. You can shop the individual Marketplace, like other freelancers. Left a job with health benefits? You may get a special time to sign up.

I'm still an apprentice.

Most electricians train for 4 to 5 years, with about 2,000 hours of paid work each year. Marketplace help is based on what you expect to earn this year. If you get a raise, update your application.

What if I hire a helper?

With 1 or more employees, a small business plan (called SHOP) may be an option. It is a different path from your own plan, and we can walk you through it.

How we help

Licensed help for
one-person shops.

We are an independent brokerage, based in Central Florida and licensed in 30+ states. When you work for yourself, there is no HR team to explain health plans. We do that part. We start with Marketplace plans and tax credits. If you earn too much for help, we can also show private PPO options for the self-employed. Some private plans ask health questions, and approval is not guaranteed. Some may not cover care for health problems you had before you enrolled.

In Florida, an electrical contractor's license can cover the whole state or one local area. Health plan networks also vary by plan and area. So we check your doctors in each one.

Straight answers

Electrician health insurance questions.

Will this cover my electrical business?

No. This is health insurance for you and your family. Business liability and workers' comp are separate, with their own rules. For workers' comp, ask a business insurance agent or the Florida Division of Workers' Compensation.

My union has a health plan. Do I need this?

Maybe not. Look at what your union plan covers first. If you leave a union job or go out on your own, your coverage could change, so talk to us before you switch.

I'm an apprentice. Can I get help paying for a plan?

Maybe. As of October 1, 2026, the extra tax credit help of past years has ended. Under current law, Marketplace tax credits are generally for household incomes from 100% to 400% of the poverty line. For 2027 plans, 400% is about $63,840 for one person, based on the 2026 poverty guidelines. If a job offers you health coverage, you usually can't get the credit.

Can I use an HSA?

Under current law, starting in 2026, bronze and catastrophic plans can be paired with a health savings account (HSA). For 2027, you can put in up to $4,500 for yourself or $9,000 for a family.

I live outside Florida. Can you still help me?

Likely. Paul is licensed in 30+ states. Tell us your state, and we will confirm before we start.
