Ways that may lower what you pay each month and when you get care, from tax credits to plan type to coverage made just for kids.
Paying less
Affordable means two things: what you pay every month, and what you pay when you use care. Three questions budget shoppers ask:
If you qualify, yes. The credit is tied to household income and to the price of the second-lowest-cost silver plan where you live. If you take it monthly, it lowers your monthly premium.
Not always. A small premium often comes with a big deductible. If you see doctors often or fill regular prescriptions, a plan that costs more each month may cost less over the year.
No. Florida KidCare is health insurance made just for kids. Many families pay $15 or $20 a month to cover all qualifying children, and most pay nothing.

Two kinds of cost
Your real cost is the premium plus what you pay when you get care.
Ways to pay less
Qualify for a tax credit with household income at or below 250% of the poverty line? A silver plan can come with a smaller deductible and lower copays. See our bronze vs silver guide.
IRS rules now treat bronze and catastrophic Marketplace plans as HSA-eligible, starting in 2026. HSA money used for qualified medical costs comes out tax-free. Ask your tax pro.
These plans generally pay only for care from their own network, except emergencies. Compare the premium with a wider-network plan before you choose. Make sure your doctors are in network first.
Florida costs in numbers
Floridians paid $10 or less a month per person after tax credits for 2026. That is about 1 in 3.

Working with Paul
Paul Daniels owns Daniels Health Advisors, an independent brokerage licensed in 30+ U.S. states. Florida families, single adults, and people between jobs call us when a renewal notice shows a price they can't manage. We start with Marketplace plans and any tax credit, then compare total yearly cost. If you get little or no tax credit, we can also show private PPO options. Some private plans ask health questions, and approval is not guaranteed. Some may not cover care for health problems you had before you enrolled.

Before you choose on price
Guessing your income too low can make the tax credit look bigger than it really is. If income comes in higher, part of it can come due when you file. Under current law, starting with 2026 taxes, there is no cap on that payback. We help you pick a careful number. You will leave with:
A checklist for
Affordable coverage questions
There is no single answer. For many people, a Marketplace plan with a tax credit is a good place to start. For children, Florida KidCare may cost less. We compare total yearly cost for your household.
If you qualify for cost-sharing reductions, choose a silver plan. If not, gold plans usually have lower deductibles than bronze or silver plans, with higher premiums.
It depends. Private plans set prices differently, and people who get little or no tax credit sometimes compare them. You can often apply any time of year. Some private plans ask health questions, and approval is not guaranteed. Some may not cover care for health problems you had before you enrolled. They also don't come with premium tax credits.
Yes. Florida KidCare offers coverage for children at every income level, but families with higher incomes pay the full monthly cost. Costs are based on a child's age, household size, and income, and you can apply any time of year.
For a private plan (not from the Marketplace), you can often apply any time of year. Some private plans ask health questions, and approval is not guaranteed. Some may not cover care for health problems you had before you enrolled. Marketplace plans, and other plans that follow ACA rules, work differently. As of October 16, 2026, under current law, open enrollment for 2027 Marketplace coverage runs from November 1, 2026, through January 15, 2027. A court case about these dates is still on appeal, so confirm the dates before you enroll. To start coverage January 1, pick a plan by December 15 (the deadline under current law). Outside those dates, you may need a qualifying life event, like losing job-based coverage, or another special enrollment period.
