For owners, partners & founders

Life insurance
for business owners.

When you own a business, your life coverage can protect two things at once: your family and the company you built.

What owners ask

The business runs on you.
Then what?

Owners usually come to us with one of these worries:

My bank loan has my personal guarantee.

If something happens to you, the lender may still expect payment from your estate. Some owners size personal coverage to include that debt.

My partner and I never planned for this.

Without a plan, a partner's spouse or children can inherit a share of the company. A buy-sell agreement funded with life insurance is one common answer.

One person brings in most of the sales.

Losing a key person can cut revenue while you hire and train. Key person coverage pays the business, not the family.

Four common uses

How owners use
life insurance.

One policy rarely does everything. Here is how the pieces usually fit.

  • Personal coverage. Protects your household, just like any family policy. Owners often include business debts they signed for.
  • Key person coverage. The business owns the policy on someone it depends on and receives the money if that person dies.
  • Buy-sell funding. Policies give the remaining owners or the company cash to buy out a deceased owner's share at an agreed price.
  • Loan coverage. Some lenders ask for life coverage on the owner as a condition of a loan.
  • Tax and legal rules differ for each use. Talk with your CPA or attorney before you set this up.

How we help

We bring the policy. Your advisors bring the plan.

We help you compare and apply for life insurance. The legal agreement and tax setup belong with your attorney and CPA. We are happy to work alongside them so the coverage matches the plan they write.

If you also need health coverage for yourself or your team, we can help with that separately, through our small-group health work.

  • Clear notes your CPA and attorney can review
  • Life insurance in states where we are licensed for life insurance · Paul Daniels, NPN 20986580 · FL license G065122
  • No fee for our help. If you buy, the insurance company pays us a commission, and commissions can differ by company.

Three steps

Business owner life insurance, step by step.

Map what needs protecting

Your family, any loans you guaranteed, partners, and the people the business depends on.

Match the coverage to each need

Personal, key person, or buy-sell coverage, each owned and paid the right way.

Apply and review yearly

The insurance company decides on approval. We revisit amounts as the business grows.

Our approach

Slow down before you sign.

Business life insurance touches ownership, taxes, and family. Getting the setup right matters more than speed.

  • We do not give tax or legal advice.
  • We do not promise approval or a price.
  • We do not sell a permanent policy just because it is bigger.

Bring to the first call

Helpful to gather first.

  • Ownership split among partners
  • A recent value estimate for the business, if you have one
  • Loans you personally guaranteed
  • Any buy-sell or operating agreement you already signed
  • Names of your CPA and attorney

Questions

Business owner life insurance FAQ.

As of October 13, 2026.

Can my business pay for my life insurance?

Sometimes. It depends on who owns the policy, who receives the money, and how the business is set up. The tax result differs for each. Talk with your CPA or attorney before you set this up.

What is the difference between key person and buy-sell coverage?

Key person coverage pays the business to help it get through the loss of someone important. Buy-sell coverage pays for an owner's share of the company so it passes to the remaining owners at an agreed price.

Are business life insurance premiums tax deductible?

Usually not when the business is the beneficiary. Some setups are treated differently. Talk with your CPA before you count on any deduction.

How much coverage does a business owner need?

Start with what your family would need, then add business debts you guaranteed. Key person and buy-sell amounts are separate and depend on the business and its value.

Is approval guaranteed for business policies?

No. The insurance company reviews health, finances, and the business reason for the coverage before it decides.
