On the road

A different state
every week.

Life on the road brings coverage questions most jobs never do. Three we hear from drivers:

Will my plan work on the road?

Every Marketplace plan covers emergency care anywhere in the U.S. Routine care is different. Many plans only cover in-network care near home, so check the network before you buy.

My gross is big, but my net is not.

Fuel, repairs, truck payments, and insurance come out first. The Marketplace looks at your net income for the year you are covered, so some owner-operators qualify for more help than they expect. If your income ends up higher, you may have to pay some back at tax time. Ask a tax pro how to count truck costs.

Is occupational accident coverage enough?

No. Occupational accident coverage is for on-the-job injuries. It is not health insurance, and it does not cover illness, your family, or care off the clock.

How trucking income works

Gross, settlements, and net.

The Marketplace bases tax credits on your household income for the year you are covered.

  • Lease-on drivers get weekly settlements after fuel, escrow, and fees. Drivers with their own authority bill shippers and pay every cost themselves.
  • A bad month of repairs or a slow freight market can cut your net fast. Base your guess on 12 months of settlements, not one good load.
  • Per diem, depreciation on the truck, and other tax rules can change your net income a lot. Your tax pro can tell you what to use.

Working with Paul

Help that fits
a driver's schedule.

Daniels Health Advisors is an independent brokerage licensed in 30+ U.S. states, run by Paul Daniels. Drivers can call from a truck stop or a rest area. We look at Marketplace plans in your home county first, where tax credits may apply. When net pay is high, Paul can also explain private PPO options with wider networks. Some private plans ask health questions, and approval is not guaranteed. Some may not cover care for health problems you had before you enrolled.

Your plan is tied to your home address, the one on your CDL and tax return. We check plans and networks for that county, and we look at the places you run most.

Before your next dispatch

Fewer surprises
at the next stop.

Drivers who guess too low on net settlements may owe tax credit back. Under current law, starting with 2026 taxes, there is no cap on that payback. A local-only network can leave you paying full price three states away. When we wrap up, expect:

  • A net income figure built from real settlements
  • Network notes for your home county and main lanes
  • Emergency and urgent care rules spelled out
  • Renewal dates set before your busy freight months

A checklist for

Drivers going from company to owner-operator.

  • Ending a company job ends its plan. That can open a special time to sign up, so act fast.
  • Keep your DOT medical card and health records easy to find on the road.
  • Telehealth can help between home visits. Ask if a plan includes it.
  • Lease-on contracts sometimes offer health options. Compare them with a personal plan before you sign.

Driver questions

Truck driver health insurance FAQ.

I am a company driver. Do I need this?

Start with your employer plan. If you go owner-operator, lease on, or lose that plan, call us and we will compare other options.

Can I get a plan with a national network?

Some plans have wider networks than others. A few private plans use national PPO networks. Some private plans ask health questions, and approval is not guaranteed. Some may not cover care for health problems you had before you enrolled. We will show what is sold where you live.

Does my DOT physical count as a checkup?

No. The DOT physical checks if you are fit to drive. It is not the same as a yearly preventive visit, which most health plans cover. Most health plans do not pay for a DOT physical, so ask the clinic about the price.

What if I change my home state for my CDL?

A new home address can change the plans you can buy, and a move can open a special time to sign up. Tell us before you switch, so we can look at the new county.

Can I write off my health insurance?

Maybe. If you are self-employed and your business makes a profit, your premiums may be deductible on IRS Form 7206. You can't take it for any month you could get a subsidized job plan, including through a spouse. Ask your tax pro.

Do I have to wait for open enrollment?

For a private plan (not from the Marketplace), you can often apply any time of year. Some private plans ask health questions, and approval is not guaranteed. Some may not cover care for health problems you had before you enrolled. Marketplace plans, and other plans that follow ACA rules, work differently. As of October 12, 2026, under current law, open enrollment for 2027 Marketplace coverage runs from November 1, 2026, through January 15, 2027. A court case about these dates is still on appeal, so check HealthCare.gov. To start coverage January 1, pick a plan by December 15 (the deadline under current law). Outside those dates, you may need a qualifying life event, like losing job-based coverage, or another special enrollment period.
