Behind the lens

Wedding season pays.
Winter can be quiet.

Photo work comes in seasons and gigs. Three things photographers ask us:

Most of my money comes in a few months.

Deposits and wedding season can bunch your pay. The Marketplace looks at the whole year, so guess the full-year total, minus costs.

Gear eats my profit.

Cameras, lenses, software, and travel can be business costs. They can lower the net profit the Marketplace looks at. Ask your tax pro.

I travel for shoots.

Every Marketplace plan covers emergency care anywhere in the U.S. Routine care away from home may not be covered, so check the network.

How photo income works

Retainers, sessions, and prints.

The Marketplace bases tax credits on your household income for the year you are covered.

  • Many wedding photographers take a retainer months ahead, then the balance near the date. Count income in the year you get paid.
  • Mini sessions, headshots, and real estate shoots can smooth out slow months.
  • Second shooters are often paid as 1099 contractors. That pay is income for them and a cost for the lead photographer.

Working with Paul

Clear help for
creative pros.

Paul Daniels runs Daniels Health Advisors, an independent brokerage licensed in 30+ U.S. states. Wedding, portrait, and event shooters call us to set up their own plan. We check Marketplace plans first, since tax credits may apply. After a strong season, we can also show private PPO options. Some private plans ask health questions, and approval is not guaranteed. Some may not cover care for health problems you had before you enrolled.

We compare personal and family plans for photographers and their households. Gear insurance and liability are separate, and we do not sell them.

Before your next booking

Focus your
coverage.

Retainers paid in one year count in that year, and that can surprise you at tax time. Under current law, starting with 2026 taxes, there is no cap on that payback. Out-of-area visits can cost more if the network is small. You will leave with:

  • An income estimate built from your bookings
  • Gear and software set apart as business costs
  • Network notes for the places you shoot
  • Plan dates set around wedding season

A checklist for

Photographers going full time.

  • Leaving a day job with a plan can open a special time to sign up.
  • Keep retainers and final payments in one sheet. It helps your estimate.
  • If you hire second shooters, their coverage is their own.
  • Ask about telehealth for busy weekends on the road.

Photographer questions

Photographer health insurance FAQ.

I shoot part time and work a day job. Can you help?

Yes. If your day job offers a plan, start there. If not, we will look at plans based on your total household income.

Do I need a separate plan for travel shoots?

Your health plan covers emergencies across the U.S. For trips outside the U.S., many plans cover little or nothing, so ask about travel medical coverage.

My income changed mid-year. What do I do?

If you have tax credits, update your income with the Marketplace. That can help you avoid a big payback at tax time.

I sell prints and presets too. Does that count?

Yes. Print sales, presets, and teaching all add to your income. Costs for printing and software can lower your net profit.

Can I write off my health insurance?

Maybe. If you are self-employed and your business makes a profit, your premiums may be deductible on IRS Form 7206. You can't take it for any month you could get a subsidized job plan, including through a spouse. Ask your tax pro.

Do I have to wait for open enrollment?

For a private plan (not from the Marketplace), you can often apply any time of year. Some private plans ask health questions, and approval is not guaranteed. Some may not cover care for health problems you had before you enrolled. Marketplace plans, and other plans that follow ACA rules, work differently. As of October 12, 2026, under current law, open enrollment for 2027 Marketplace coverage runs from November 1, 2026, through January 15, 2027. A court case about these dates is still on appeal, so check HealthCare.gov. To start coverage January 1, pick a plan by December 15 (the deadline under current law). Outside those dates, you may need a qualifying life event, like losing job-based coverage, or another special enrollment period.
