For 1099 agents & independent producers · Licensed in 30+ U.S. states
You sell coverage all day. If you are a 1099 agent or run your own agency, your own health plan still needs a careful look.
At the kitchen table
Agent pay can rise and fall fast. Three questions agents ask us:
New business, renewals, and chargebacks can move your income. Make a careful full-year guess, and update it if things change.
If you get a 1099, you are likely self-employed. That usually means no job-based plan, so you choose your own.
P&C and life agents may not keep up with health plan rules. We focus on health plans and can walk you through the options.

How agent income works
The Marketplace bases tax credits on your household income for the year you are covered.

Working with Paul
Daniels Health Advisors is Paul Daniels' independent brokerage, licensed in 30+ U.S. states. Life, P&C, and annuity agents call us when their own health plan needs a second look. We compare Marketplace plans first, where tax credits may apply, and add private PPO options when commissions are strong. Some private plans ask health questions, and approval is not guaranteed. Some may not cover care for health problems you had before you enrolled.
Daniels Health Advisors is an independent brokerage. For agents and their families, we compare personal and family plans, starting with the Marketplace, where tax credits may apply.

Before your next appointment
A strong first-year run can raise your income past your estimate, and that can trigger a payback. Under current law, starting with 2026 taxes, there is no cap on that payback. A plan without your doctors is a hard sell. Expect to leave with:
A checklist for
Agent questions
Rules vary by carrier, state, and, for Marketplace plans, CMS. Many agents still like a second set of eyes. We are happy to compare plans for you.
If the agency plan counts as affordable, you may not get Marketplace tax credits. We can compare both and show the full cost.
Yes. Renewal commissions count toward your income for the year. Business costs, like licenses and leads, can lower your net profit.
Start with a careful, low first-year number. New agents often have uneven early months. Update your estimate as policies stick.
Maybe. If you are self-employed and your business makes a profit, your premiums may be deductible on IRS Form 7206. You can't take it for any month you could get a subsidized job plan, including through a spouse. Ask your tax pro.
For a private plan (not from the Marketplace), you can often apply any time of year. Some private plans ask health questions, and approval is not guaranteed. Some may not cover care for health problems you had before you enrolled. Marketplace plans, and other plans that follow ACA rules, work differently. As of October 12, 2026, under current law, open enrollment for 2027 Marketplace coverage runs from November 1, 2026, through January 15, 2027. A court case about these dates is still on appeal, so check HealthCare.gov. To start coverage January 1, pick a plan by December 15 (the deadline under current law). Outside those dates, you may need a qualifying life event, like losing job-based coverage, or another special enrollment period.
