Home to home

Many homes.
No benefits.

Cleaning is hard work, and many cleaners have no job plan. Three questions we hear:

Clients cancel, and my week shrinks.

Your pay can change when clients move or skip a visit. Make a careful full-year guess, and update it if things change.

My hours are long and physical.

Bending, lifting, and cleaning products can be hard on your body. Pick a plan with doctors you can reach.

I may qualify for a lot of help.

Many cleaners earn amounts where Marketplace tax credits may lower the monthly cost. Some may qualify for Medicaid. We will check.

How cleaning income works

Regulars, one-time cleans, and move-outs.

The Marketplace bases tax credits on your household income for the year you are covered.

  • Weekly and biweekly clients give steady pay. Deep cleans and move-outs pay more but come and go.
  • Supplies, gas, and app fees can count as business costs. Keep receipts.
  • If you hire helpers, your business may need payroll and workers' comp. Your own health plan is separate.

Working with Paul

A licensed broker
in your corner.

Daniels Health Advisors is an independent brokerage licensed in 30+ U.S. states, owned by Paul Daniels. Many cleaners have never had a job plan, so we start from the basics. Marketplace plans come first, and tax credits may apply. If your income is too low, we will tell you if Medicaid may fit better. Higher earners can also see private PPO options. Some private plans ask health questions, and approval is not guaranteed. Some may not cover care for health problems you had before you enrolled.

Daniels Health Advisors compares personal and family plans, starting with the Marketplace, where tax credits may apply. If your income is low, we will tell you if Medicaid may be a better fit.

Before your next deep clean

Coverage that
fits your week.

If you add clients mid-year, your credit may change. Report it, or you could owe some back. Under current law, starting with 2026 taxes, there is no cap on that payback. We also check that your doctors are in the plan. You will finish with:

  • An income estimate based on your client list
  • A check on whether Medicaid, CHIP, or tax credits may fit
  • Nearby clinics and pharmacies checked
  • Reminders for renewal and open enrollment

A checklist for

Cleaners building a business.

  • Write down each client and what they pay. It makes the income guess easy.
  • Supplies and mileage can count as business costs.
  • If a client cancels for good, update your estimate.
  • As of October 12, 2026, Florida has not expanded Medicaid.

Cleaner questions

House cleaner health insurance FAQ.

I clean through an app. Am I self-employed?

Often, yes. Many apps treat cleaners as independent contractors. If you get a 1099, you usually buy your own plan.

What if I earn too little for tax credits?

In some states, Medicaid may cover you instead. In states that did not expand Medicaid, some adults earn too little for tax credits and too much for Medicaid. Tell us your state, and we will check.

Can my kids be covered too?

Yes. Children may qualify for Medicaid or CHIP even if you do not. We look at the whole household.

I get paid in cash by most clients. Is that a problem?

No, but it all counts as income. A simple notebook or app log of each payment makes your estimate and taxes easier.

Can I write off my health insurance?

Maybe. If you are self-employed and your business makes a profit, your premiums may be deductible on IRS Form 7206. You can't take it for any month you could get a subsidized job plan, including through a spouse. Ask your tax pro.

Do I have to wait for open enrollment?

For a private plan (not from the Marketplace), you can often apply any time of year. Some private plans ask health questions, and approval is not guaranteed. Some may not cover care for health problems you had before you enrolled. Marketplace plans, and other plans that follow ACA rules, work differently. As of October 12, 2026, under current law, open enrollment for 2027 Marketplace coverage runs from November 1, 2026, through January 15, 2027. A court case about these dates is still on appeal, so check HealthCare.gov. To start coverage January 1, pick a plan by December 15 (the deadline under current law). Outside those dates, you may need a qualifying life event, like losing job-based coverage, or another special enrollment period.
