Questions we hear

Leaving work
a little early?

About 60,100 people live in Madison. These are the questions early retirees bring us.

“My job plan ends when I retire. What then?”

Losing job coverage usually opens a 60-day window to pick a marketplace plan. You can apply before your last day so the new plan is ready.

“We live on what we saved. What counts as income?”

The tax credit is based on your household's expected income for the year, not the balance in your accounts. Withdrawals from some accounts can count, so we map out what you plan to draw.

“My spouse still works. Do we both switch?”

Not always. Sometimes one spouse stays on a job plan and the other buys a marketplace plan. We compare both ways.

How we help

Steady help for
Madison retirees.

We aren't tied to one insurer, so we can set several Alabama plans side by side. For each one, we total a year of premiums with the deductible and look up the doctors you already trust.

Early retirement often means income comes from a mix of places: a pension, part-time work, or account withdrawals. Your plan's price can depend on that mix, so we sketch the year with you before you apply.

Some couples retire a few years apart. We map who leaves work first, which plan each person is on, and the month each change happens, so nobody falls through a gap.

A pension that starts at 62, or a buyout that pays out in two parts, changes the year's total. We line up each source by month.

Before we pick, we ask which prescriptions you take every day. A plan's drug list can make a bigger difference than its premium.

Straight answers

Madison health insurance questions.

When is open enrollment in Alabama for 2027?

For 2027, Alabama shoppers use HealthCare.gov. As of October 19, 2026, under current law, the window is November 1, 2026, to January 15, 2027. A federal appeal about open enrollment dates is pending (City of Columbus v. Kennedy, 4th Cir. No. 26-1938), with oral argument set for October 30, 2026. Confirm the dates before you enroll. Pick a plan by December 15 for a January 1 start.

Has Alabama expanded Medicaid?

No. As of October 19, 2026, Alabama has not adopted the ACA Medicaid expansion, according to KFF. That means the rules for low-income adults are different here than in many states, so we check your options with you.

Can I keep my plan if I move part of the year?

Marketplace plans are tied to where you live. If you spend months in another state, tell us early, since a plan's network may not reach that far.

Do withdrawals from retirement accounts count as income?

Some do and some don't, depending on the account type. We include what you expect to take out. For tax questions, talk with a tax professional.

What if I take a part-time job after retiring?

Add the expected pay to your income estimate. If the job offers a plan, we compare it with your marketplace plan.

Is it worth keeping a plan with a higher premium for my doctor?

Sometimes. If you see a specialist often, a plan that includes them can cost less over the year than a lower premium without them.

Should I keep a high-deductible plan with an HSA?

It can work if you pay little in care. We compare the yearly cost with a lower-deductible plan.

Who do I call if a claim is denied?

Start with the insurer's appeal process. We can explain the steps and the deadlines.

Open enrollment starts November 1
