Questions we hear

You run the business.
Who covers you?

Louisville's median household income was $66,849, per the Census Bureau. Business owners here ask us these.

“I own a small business with no employees. Where do I buy a plan?”

HealthCare.gov says a business with no employees counts as self-employed for coverage. In Kentucky, you can shop for your own plan on kynect.

“My profit changes every year. What income do I use?”

Use your best estimate of 2027 profit after business costs. If it changes a lot, update kynect during the year.

“Can my spouse and kids be on my plan?”

Yes. A family can be on one plan. Kids may also qualify for KCHIP or Medicaid, and we check that too.

Straight answers

Louisville health insurance questions.

When is open enrollment in Kentucky for 2027?

Kentucky runs its own exchange, kynect. As of October 27, 2026, the Kentucky Health Benefit Exchange says open enrollment for plan year 2027 runs November 1, 2026, to January 15, 2027. Kentucky sets its own enrollment dates through kynect. Confirm them at kynect.ky.gov before you enroll. Ask about your start date before you finish, since it depends on when you enroll.

Did Kentucky expand Medicaid?

Yes. As of October 27, 2026, KFF lists Kentucky as a state that adopted the ACA Medicaid expansion. The exchange says you can enroll in Medicaid or KCHIP any time of year if you qualify.

Can I deduct my premiums?

Some self-employed people may be able to deduct what they pay for health coverage. Ask a tax professional about your case.

Is Louisville the same as Jefferson County?

Mostly. Louisville and Jefferson County share one metro government. A few small cities in the county have their own.

What if I start offering a plan to workers later?

Then you may have new choices for yourself too. We can go over them when you are ready.

Do I need my business tax return?

It helps. Last year's return and your books for this year give us a better 2027 estimate.

What should I gather?

Your last tax return, a rough profit number for 2027, and the names of your doctors and drugs.

Can my business pay for my plan?

Ask a tax professional how your business can handle it. We focus on finding a plan that fits.

Open enrollment starts November 1
