Common questions

New to buying
your own plan?

Hoboken's median age is about 32, and two in three homes are rented. Here is what people ask us.

“I'm turning 26. When does my parent's plan end?”

Check the date your parent's plan ends for you. Losing that coverage usually lets you sign up outside open enrollment, often up to 60 days after. We help you plan around a gap.

“I make too much for help, right?”

Not always. As of October 19, 2026, New Jersey's Department of Banking and Insurance says state subsidies, called New Jersey Health Plan Savings, remain available up to 600% of the poverty level. That is higher than the federal limit.

“My doctor is in New York. Is that covered?”

It depends on the plan. Some New Jersey plans include New York doctors and some do not. We look up each doctor before you choose.

How we help

Simple help for
Hoboken renters and workers.

We are not tied to one insurance company. We explain deductibles and copays in simple terms, check your doctors on both sides of the Hudson, and add up what each plan may cost for the year.

Hoboken has a lot of first-time plan buyers: people coming off a parent's plan, leaving a firm in Manhattan, or starting freelance work from a Washington Street apartment. Deductibles, coinsurance, and networks can be new words. We go through one real example, like an urgent care visit, so you see what you would actually pay.

  • Help with your first plan on your own
  • Licensed in 30+ U.S. states · Paul Daniels, NPN 20986580
  • You do not pay us for our help. We are paid by the insurance companies when you enroll. Your price for a plan is the same whether you use us or sign up on your own. Commissions can differ by company.

Hoboken health insurance questions.

When is open enrollment in New Jersey for 2027?

New Jersey's Department of Banking and Insurance says open enrollment for 2027 runs from November 1, 2026, through January 31, 2027. Get Covered New Jersey's usual rule is that signing up by December 31 starts coverage January 1. Check the site for exact dates. As of October 19, 2026, a federal appeal about open enrollment dates is pending (City of Columbus v. Kennedy, 4th Cir. No. 26-1938), with oral argument set for October 30, 2026.

Does New Jersey have a penalty for no coverage?

Yes. As of October 19, 2026, New Jersey has its own rule that you have coverage. If you go without it, you may owe a payment on your state tax return unless you qualify for an exemption. The New Jersey Division of Taxation has the details.

I freelance. What income do I put down?

Give an honest estimate of your profit for the year, after business costs. Add any other household income. If your work picks up or slows down, update your application. Our gig worker page has more.

I commute to Manhattan. Does my plan work in New York?

Your plan is based on where you live, so a Hoboken address means a New Jersey plan. Some New Jersey plans have doctors in New York and some don't. Emergency care is covered either way. For regular visits, we check the doctors you see in the city.

I just moved to Hoboken. Can I sign up now?

You may. Moving to New Jersey from another state can let you sign up outside open enrollment, usually within 60 days of the move. Some moves have extra rules, so we check your situation with you.

Open enrollment starts November 1
