Questions we hear

New to
Albany?

Only about 38 in 100 Albany homes are lived in by their owners, the Census Bureau reports. Renters come and go, and newcomers ask us things like these.

“Does my old plan work here?”

Often not. Most individual plans are sold for one area. When you move to a new state, you usually need a plan sold where you now live.

“Can I sign up even if it's not open enrollment?”

A move can open a Special Enrollment Period. NY State of Health says you generally need to sign up within 60 days of the move.

“Will I get help with the cost?”

Maybe. In New York, your income and household size decide whether you get a tax credit or qualify for a lower-cost state program.

Straight answers

Albany health insurance questions.

When is open enrollment for 2027 in New York?

Albany residents enroll through NY State of Health. As of November 3, 2026, NY State of Health lists 2027 open enrollment as November 1, 2026, through January 31, 2027. New York sets its own enrollment dates through NY State of Health. Confirm them at NYStateOfHealth.ny.gov before you enroll. Pick a plan by December 15 for coverage that starts January 1. New York's window runs longer than HealthCare.gov's.

Did New York expand Medicaid?

Yes. As of November 3, 2026, KFF lists New York as adopting the ACA Medicaid expansion. New York also runs the Essential Plan for some adults with lower incomes.

Does any move count?

Not every move. Moving within the same area may not give you new plan choices. Moving to New York from another state often does, if you had health coverage in the 60 days before the move. We check your situation.

What county is Albany in?

Albany is the capital of New York and the seat of Albany County, on the west bank of the Hudson River.

What proof might I need?

Often a lease, a utility bill, or a letter showing when your old coverage stopped. We tell you what to gather before you apply.

I moved here for school. Does that count?

It can. Students who move to Albany may have plan choices of their own. We compare them with staying on a parent's plan.

Open enrollment for 2027 runs Nov 1, 2026 to Jan 31, 2027.
