Questions we hear

A baby on the way
and questions?

Half of Salt Lake City residents are under about 33 years old, Census Bureau figures show. New and expecting parents here ask us these.

“I'm pregnant. Can I sign up for a plan right now?”

Being pregnant does not open a sign-up window on HealthCare.gov, but the birth of a baby does. Open enrollment is the other time to join. Medicaid or CHIP can start any time if you qualify.

“Will a plan cover a pregnancy that started before the plan did?”

Under current law, yes. HealthCare.gov says all Marketplace plans cover pregnancy and childbirth, even when the pregnancy began before coverage started.

“How do I add the baby after the birth?”

Report the birth to HealthCare.gov. You have 60 days, and the baby's coverage can start on the day of birth.

How we help

Parent help
in Salt Lake City.

You'll see Utah plans from several insurers side by side. We point out each plan's deductible and yearly out-of-pocket limit, since a birth year is often a year with a lot of care.

We also look at which doctors and hospitals each plan uses. That way you can see if your pregnancy doctor and the hospital where you plan to deliver are included.

Does one of you have insurance through work? We look at adding the baby there and at a plan just for the baby, and show both prices.

Plans in Salt Lake City use different groups of hospitals. We look up where you plan to deliver and where your child will see a doctor.

Your due date or the baby's birth date, your ZIP code, your 2027 income estimate, and your doctors.

Maybe. Utah CHIP is for kids, and it depends on family income. We check before you pick a plan for the baby.

Open enrollment starts November 1
