Questions we hear

HMO or PPO
for you?

About 52 in 100 Sacramento homes are lived in by their owners, per the Census Bureau. People sorting out plan types here ask us these.

“What is an HMO?”

An HMO usually covers care only from doctors who work for it or with it. It generally won't pay for care outside its network, except in an emergency.

“What makes a PPO different?”

A PPO usually costs you less when you use doctors in its network. You can still see doctors outside the network without a referral, but you pay more.

“Which kinds are sold where I live?”

It depends on your ZIP code. The plan types and insurers on Covered California are not the same in every part of the state.

How we help

Plan-type help
in Sacramento.

We list California plans for your ZIP code from more than one insurer and label each one HMO, PPO, or EPO. Next to that, you see the monthly price after any help with the cost.

Then we look at how you get care. If you want to see a specialist without a referral, or keep a doctor outside a network, the plan type matters a lot.

If you travel a lot or have a doctor outside the Sacramento area, ask us how each plan type handles care away from home.

Sacramento plans don't all use the same hospitals. We look up the ones near you that you use.
