Questions we hear

One family,
two kinds of coverage?

About 10 in 100 Richmond residents under 65 had no health coverage, the Census Bureau reports. Parents here ask us these.

“Can my kids get coverage even if I don't qualify?”

They may. In Virginia, Medicaid and FAMIS give no-cost coverage to kids who qualify. Kids have their own income rules.

“Do I need two separate forms?”

No. The state's Marketplace says one form can check each person in your family for Medicaid or FAMIS.

“What do the parents pay?”

It depends on your household and pay. Adults who don't get Medicaid may get a tax credit. It lowers the monthly price of a Marketplace plan.

How we help

Family help
in Richmond.

We go one person at a time. First we see who might get Medicaid or FAMIS. Then we line up Virginia plans from more than one insurer for everyone else.

Different coverage can mean different doctor lists. We check that each child's doctor and each parent's doctor take the coverage that person will have.

If a parent has a plan at work, we look at both choices for the kids: the job plan or FAMIS.

Richmond plans each work with their own doctors and hospitals. We check the ones your family uses.

  • Help for families with kids and parents on different coverage
