Questions we hear

No health plan
at work?

Half of Grand Rapids households earn less than $69,108 a year, the Census Bureau reports. Workers without a job plan here ask us these.

“My boss doesn't offer insurance. Can I buy my own?”

Yes. You can shop on HealthCare.gov. With no job plan to check, any tax credit depends on your household and the income you expect.

“I'm paid by the hour, and my hours change. What income do I use?”

Use your closest estimate for 2027. Last year's pay is a good place to start, and you can update it if your hours change.

“I just started this job. Can I sign up now?”

A new job with no plan does not open a sign-up window on its own. Open enrollment starts November 1. A move or losing other coverage can open a window too.

How we help

Worker help
in Grand Rapids.

We line up Michigan plans from more than one insurer. You'll see each monthly price after any tax credit, and the most you could pay in a year.

If your job starts to offer a plan later, your choices change. We explain what to watch for, so the change doesn't catch you off guard.

If your spouse's job offers a family plan, we look at that offer too, since it can change who gets a tax credit.

Grand Rapids plans each use their own doctors and hospitals. We check the ones you and your family use.

Straight answers

Grand Rapids health insurance questions.

When can I sign up for a 2027 plan in Michigan?

Michigan is a HealthCare.gov state. As of October 29, 2026, HealthCare.gov puts 2027 open enrollment from November 1, 2026, to January 15, 2027. A court case about these dates, City of Columbus v. Kennedy, is still in the courts. Check HealthCare.gov for the latest dates. Choose by December 15 for a January 1 start, or by January 15 for a February 1 start.

Did Michigan expand Medicaid?

Yes. As of October 29, 2026, KFF lists Michigan as adopting the ACA Medicaid expansion, starting April 1, 2014. Michigan calls it the Healthy Michigan Plan, and MIChild is for children.

What if my job starts offering a plan?

Then we check that offer. If the job plan counts as affordable and meets basic standards, you won't get a tax credit on a HealthCare.gov plan.

Can I keep my plan if I change jobs?

Yes. A HealthCare.gov plan is not tied to your job. Just report income changes so your tax credit stays close to right.

Does it matter if I work part time?

Not for buying your own plan. Full-time and part-time workers can both shop on HealthCare.gov.

What county is Grand Rapids in?

Grand Rapids is in Kent County, and it is the county seat.

What should I have ready?

Your ZIP code, everyone's age, recent pay stubs, and the names of your doctors and drugs.

Can my kids be on a different plan than me?

Yes. Kids may qualify for Medicaid or MIChild while adults choose a HealthCare.gov plan. We check each person.

Open enrollment starts November 1
