Questions we hear

Never bought
a plan before?

About 21 in 100 Fort Worth residents under 65 had no health coverage, the Census Bureau reports. First-time buyers here ask us these.

“What do Bronze, Silver, and Gold mean?”

They are plan levels. Bronze plans often cost less each month but more when you get care. Gold works the other way. Silver sits in the middle.

“What's a deductible?”

It's what you pay for some care before the plan starts paying its share. Many shots and screenings often cost $0, even before you reach it.

“Is there a cap on what I could pay?”

Yes. Each plan has an out-of-pocket maximum. Once you reach it, the plan pays for covered in-network care for the rest of the year.

How we help

Starter help
in Fort Worth.

We put Texas plans from several insurers side by side and explain each one as we go. You'll see the monthly price after any tax credit and the most you could pay in a year.

Plans also differ in which doctors you can see. We show how HMO, PPO, and EPO plans handle that.

If you have a job that offers a plan, we check that offer first. It can change whether you get a tax credit.

Fort Worth plans each list their own doctors and hospitals. We check that the ones near you are included.

Straight answers

Fort Worth health insurance questions.

When can I sign up for a 2027 plan in Texas?

Texas uses HealthCare.gov. As of October 28, 2026, HealthCare.gov lists open enrollment for 2027 as November 1, 2026, through January 15, 2027. A court case about these dates, City of Columbus v. Kennedy, is still in the courts. Check HealthCare.gov for the latest dates. If you pick by December 15, coverage can start January 1.

Did Texas expand Medicaid?

No. As of October 28, 2026, KFF lists Texas as a state that has not adopted the ACA Medicaid expansion. Texas Medicaid and CHIP still cover some children, families, and others with low income.

Is there a penalty for not having a plan?

Not a federal one. HealthCare.gov says the federal fee for having no coverage no longer applies.

What if I miss open enrollment?

After January 15, you can sign up only after certain life events, like a move, a new baby, or losing other coverage. Medicaid and CHIP are open all year.

What's the difference between a copay and coinsurance?

A copay is a set dollar amount for a visit or a drug. Coinsurance is a percent of the bill that you pay after the deductible.

Is Fort Worth in one county?

Not quite. Most of Fort Worth is in Tarrant County, and parts of it are in a few nearby counties.

What do I need to get started?

Your ZIP code, everyone's age, your 2027 income estimate, and any drugs you take.

Do plans cover prescription drugs?

Under current law, prescription drugs are one of the essential health benefits. Each plan has its own drug list, so we look up yours.

Open enrollment starts November 1
