Questions we hear

Buying a plan
in your 50s or 60s?

Census Bureau numbers show about 26 in 100 Dallas residents under 65 without health coverage. People in their 50s and early 60s ask us these.

“Why do plans cost more at my age?”

Under federal rules, plans can charge older adults more than younger ones. A tax credit, if you qualify, can lower your price.

“I take a few drugs every month. Which plan covers them?”

Each plan has its own drug list. We check your drugs on each plan and show what you would pay.

“I retired early. How do I count my income?”

Money from pensions, part-time work, and some retirement account withdrawals can count. A tax professional can help you plan.

How we help

Help for your
50s and 60s in Dallas.

We are not tied to one insurer, so we can compare Texas plans from several. We add the monthly price to the out-of-pocket cap, so you see a high-use total for the year.

Many people your age see a few doctors on a regular basis. We check each one before you choose, not after.

If you and your spouse are different ages, we show what each of you would pay, since price goes up with age.

Some Dallas plans use a smaller group of doctors and hospitals. We look up the ones you already use.

Straight answers

Dallas health insurance questions.

When is open enrollment in Texas for 2027?

Dallas residents enroll through HealthCare.gov. As of October 26, 2026, HealthCare.gov lists open enrollment for 2027 as November 1, 2026, through January 15, 2027. A court case about these dates, City of Columbus v. Kennedy, is still on appeal, with argument set for October 30, 2026. Confirm the dates before you enroll. Choose a plan by December 15 to start January 1.

Can adults in Texas get Medicaid?

Few adults can. As of October 26, 2026, KFF shows Texas has not adopted the ACA Medicaid expansion, so most adults without children don't qualify based on income alone.

Is there a limit on what I pay in a year?

Yes. Marketplace plans have an out-of-pocket maximum. Once you reach it, the plan pays for covered care in the network for the rest of the year.

What if I retire in the middle of the year?

Losing job coverage usually opens a 60-day window to pick a plan. We help you time the start date so there is no gap.

Can my spouse and I be on different plans?

Yes. Some couples pick separate plans, like when they see different doctors. We show it both ways.

Is Dallas in one county?

No. Dallas is mostly in Dallas County, with parts in Collin, Denton, Kaufman, and Rockwall Counties.

What should I bring to the call?

A list of your doctors and the drugs you take, plus your expected 2027 income.

Do plans cover checkups?

Under current law, Marketplace plans cover many preventive services, like some screenings and shots, at no cost in the network.

Open enrollment starts November 1
