Questions we hear

Done with
school?

Half of Athens residents are younger than about 29, the Census Bureau reports. New grads ask us questions like these.

“My student plan ends soon. What now?”

Losing student coverage can open a Special Enrollment Period. HealthCare.gov says you generally have 60 days to pick a new plan.

“Can I go back on a parent's plan?”

Often, until you turn 26. We compare that with a plan of your own so you can see both.

“I'm starting a job soon. Should I wait?”

If there's a gap before job coverage begins, a plan for those months can protect you. We help you weigh it.

We compare Athens plans from several insurers. Each one lists the monthly price after any tax credit and the deductible.

If you're moving after graduation, we check plans in your new area too, so you aren't stuck with doctors you can't reach.

Many grads leave town for a first job. If you're headed to Atlanta or out of state, we look at networks there too.

Straight answers

Athens health insurance questions.

When is 2027 open enrollment in Georgia?

Athens residents enroll through Georgia Access. As of November 3, 2026, Georgia Access lists 2027 open enrollment as November 1, 2026, through January 15, 2027. Georgia sets its own enrollment dates through Georgia Access. Confirm them at GeorgiaAccess.gov before you enroll. Enroll by December 15 for coverage that starts January 1.

Did Georgia expand Medicaid?

No. As of November 3, 2026, KFF lists Georgia as not adopting the ACA Medicaid expansion. For a grad with a low first-year income, we show what a Marketplace plan would cost with a tax credit.

Does graduating count if I drop the plan myself?

Losing student coverage can count. Choosing to drop it early usually does not. We check your end date.

What county is Athens in?

Athens and Clarke County merged into one government, Athens-Clarke County, in 1991.

Is a parent's plan always cheaper for me?

Not always. A plan of your own, with a tax credit based on a new grad's income, could cost less. We run both.

What if I'm starting grad school instead?

Then a new school plan may be an option. We compare it with Marketplace plans sold where you'll study.

Open enrollment for 2027 runs Nov 1, 2026 to Jan 15, 2027.
